Okay, so today I want to share my opinion of Martha Jones, the least loved of the modern companions. I'll be honest. I don't like Martha. But I don't think it's fair to bash on her. Because I think she had brilliant potential as a companion. But instead of focusing on that potential, the writers made her character center too much on her unrequited love for the Doctor. There are several problems with this.
First of all, we all knew that was never going to happen. So the storyline about her crush was boring and honestly quite painful to watch, rather like a train wreck. She was obviously deluding herself that he felt something for her, and for such an intelligent character, that seemed really out of place.
Next, the timing was absolutely horrible. We had all just had our hearts ripped out with Doomsday, as the Doctor had, and to see a new cheery companion prancing about seeming at times to expect the Doctor to fall in love with her, well, it was like rubbing salt in the wound. What the Doctor needed at that point was a friend, like Donna was, not someone with a massive crush on him.
